Red Dog
Australian films – do they exist? Well they do, but a lot of them are not exactly great. Also, a lot of them try to hide the fact that they’re Australian, such as for example the first three Mad Max films. So when I came to Australia, I tried to finds some good ‘real’ Australian films just to learn a little bit more about the culture. And perhaps the most unexpected film I came across was Red Dog.
When I first heard the name of the film, Red Dog, I just couldn’t imagine what it could possibly be about. “Red Dog”, well, that sounds kind of like a gangster name, I thought. Maybe it’s a film about Italian mobsters in Melbourne? With their mob names, sort of like they have in all the New York mobster films? I certainly didn’t expect the simplest answer to this question… it’s a film about a red dog.
And what an amazing film it is! Even based on a true story! Red Dog was an extraordinary dog who lived in Western Australia. Nobody really owned him… he was everybody’s dog. But eventually, he traveled halfway around the world on a amazing journey. I won’t say more because otherwise I’ll spoil the film. But let me assure you: this is one beautiful film. It has stunning landscapes, brilliant cinematography and an incredible plot. Watch it and get to know this amazing Red Dog. You’ll love him.
Red Dog makes me bawl my eyes out every time I see it.
I’d also recommend (if you’re interested in more Aussie films): Looking for Alibrandi, Muriel’s Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Dish, The Castle, and Rabbit Proof Fence.
Thanks! I’ve seen Priscilla, The Dish and Rabbit Proof Fence, and I think also The Castle. I’ll definitely check out the others! 😀
