After I just had to stop watching the 4th TV series within a few months about 10mins into the first episode because I could not handle the shaky, handheld camera, I would like to use my humble blog, which definitely no TV show producers will ever read, to rant about this absolutely stupid trend.

I just cannot watch anything with shaky camera. Very similar to how first person (and some third person) video games make me nauseous, so do movies and TV shows that use a handheld camera. It makes me feel dizzy, and in the worst case, nauseous. I’m prone to migraines and migraine-related neurological symptoms, and shaky camera is definitely something that can trigger that very quickly.

I honestly don’t understand why producers (or whoever makes these decisions) think that their TV show would be better with shaky camera. Just to make it look more like a documentary? To make people feel they’re in the action? To be edgy? The only thing that handheld cameras do for me is make me feel like I need to vomit and it’s so freaking distracting that I can’t focus on the plot. So honestly, dear producers, you have utterly failed at your job. I’m saddened that I’ll never get to watch American Primeval, Sharp Objects, Sugar and the much, much praised Black Sails.

Please stop. Please hire a decent cinematographer and a solid camera crew and give us a stunning visual experience that does not distract from the plot. That’s what this medium is supposed to do, isn’t it?
